The government of Bangladesh has approved the establishment of Central University of Science and Technology (CUST) on a very historic day, the 21st February 2016 under Private University Act (PUA)-2010 and permitted to operate from Dhaka. Thus CUST considers its founding day as the 21st February 2016. The university management acknowledges with deep gratitude the kind consent given by honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with regards to functioning of this specialized university.
With the esteemed approval on the International Mother Language Day 2016, the Central University of Science and Technology has made a remarkable progress in materializing the activities to become a true university when the society is suffering from a kind of ‘Diploma Disease’, characterized by a craze for degrees and certificates only. The CUST is well aware of the nature and gravity of this huge challenge and still promises to ride, maintaining highest possible standard of academic ethics. The CUST has planned to start its operational academic activities with effect from September 2016; hopefully from a campus that is owned by CUST.
This specialized university is an endeavour of Advance Welfare Foundation (AWF), a not-for-profit organization that was established in 2000 in order to contribute towards national development as per the national strategy of Bangladesh with a focus into technical education in different fields including the health sector. By now, AWF, through its 31 technical institutes, operating across the country, has produced 27,000 graduates who are employed both locally and internationally. During this long 16 years of education management, AWF has emerged as an excellent and trusted name in promoting affordable technical education in Bangladesh. It may proudly be mentioned here that the Board of Trustees (BoT) of AWF is now led by eminent physician and National Professor Dr M R Khan, who is also the Chairman of BoT, CUST.
Appreciating the huge responsibility conferred by the Government, the Chairman BoT of CUST has immediately formed a team of 6 key personnel of CUST management including him as the team leader to pay a 10-day visit to some of the renowned universities of the region. Accordingly, the team members left Dhaka on 05 April 2016 for visiting Singapore, Malaysia and Australia to see for themselves various facilities of renowned universities of these countries.
After a series of fruitful bi-lateral discussion with senior leaders of six universities of the region, the CUST members returned to home on 15th April 2016. The Universities where the CUST team could reach to some meaningful cooperation were Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) of Singapore,The University Putra Malaysia (UPM),The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus(UNMC), The University of Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), The International University of Malaya Wales (IUMW) and The Taylor’s University (TU). The major areas identified for cooperation are Staff Development, Review of Course Curriculum, Student Exchange Programme and Advisory Role by Experts in higher education. The CUST would continue to strengthen its ties with these universities and would also explore to benefit from mutual cooperation with other global universities. Finally, such cooperation and understanding would remain to be a continuous process for this university with a view to securing its sustainability in the field of global higher education.
